The journey
This route adds altitude to the classic island journey. On the second day, we head into the Hajhir Mountains and climb Fa'arah, a high viewpoint above Hadiboh and the northern coast. It is an early, purposeful day on foot - the kind that makes the first meal back at camp taste even better.
The remaining days move west to Detwah and Shu'ab, through Firmihin's dragon blood trees, then south and east across dunes, canyons, Arher and Hoq Cave. It is still a complete Socotra expedition, but with a more active pulse and less time spent simply observing from the vehicle.

Day by day across the island
Day 01
First sunset at Shahb Beach
Our team meets you at Socotra Airport and makes the short transfer to Shahb Beach, a peaceful stretch of coast close to the airport. The light programme leaves time to settle in, walk beside the water and watch your first Socotri sunset.
As the sun drops, we share the first briefing and dinner with the local team. Tomorrow begins early in the mountains, so tonight is about rest, good food and a first night under canvas.

Day 02
A summit above Hadiboh
We travel by 4x4 into the Hajhir Mountains and meet the local people who know these paths. After a simple local meal, we begin the ascent of Fa'arah. The trail climbs through granite country towards a summit of roughly 1,500 metres.
Allow around two hours for the ascent and a similar time to return, depending on the group and conditions. From high on the mountain, Hadiboh and the north coast spread out below. We descend carefully and return to camp for a well-earned evening.

Day 03
Qalansiyah and Detwah Lagoon
The journey turns west to Qalansiyah and Detwah, a protected lagoon held behind a long arc of sand. In the shallows, rays and waterbirds may appear; from the beach, the colours shift with every change in tide and cloud.
Later we walk or drive to higher ground for a view over the full lagoon. The day ends at camp beside Detwah, with time to recover from the mountain and prepare for tomorrow's boat journey.

Day 04
Shu'ab by sea, Firmihin by road
Weather permitting, a local boat carries us from Qalansiyah along the western cliffs to Shu'ab. The crossing is part of the experience: seabirds circle the rock faces and dolphins are sometimes seen in the open water.
After time to swim and walk at Shu'ab, we return to shore and cross the island towards Firmihin. By evening, white sand and blue water have been replaced by the dark crowns of dragon blood trees above our forest camp.

Day 05
The open south
We descend towards Aomak, where a long beach faces the Indian Ocean. There is time to rest, walk or swim if the water is calm enough, before continuing into the sand country nearby.
At Zahek, the dunes gather height and colour towards sunset. We explore their lower ridges on foot, then return to camp as the temperature falls and the first stars appear.

Day 06
Kalisan to Arher
The day begins inland at Kalisan Canyon. Smooth white rock channels clear water into a chain of pools, creating a natural pause between the dry plateau and the coast.
We then continue east to Arher. A freshwater stream crosses the beach below enormous dunes pressed against the mountain. Those with energy can climb for the view; others can swim, follow the stream or simply stay close to camp.

Day 07
Hoq Cave and the north coast
We start early on the uphill trail to Hoq Cave. Inside, the temperature changes and the light disappears into a long limestone chamber of columns, pools and mineral forms. A local guide leads the exploration and sets the safe turnaround point.
Back at sea level, we continue to Dihamri Marine Protected Area for a possible snorkel before ending at Delisha. The final evening is deliberately gentle after two demanding hiking days and a full circuit of the island.

Day 08
Departure
After breakfast, we transfer to Socotra Airport for the onward flight. Departure timing takes priority, so any final coastal stop is decided only once the confirmed schedule is clear.
Our way of travelling
An active expedition still needs good pacing. Our crew moves the camp, prepares meals and watches the logistics while local mountain knowledge shapes the hiking days. That support creates room to work hard when the route asks for it and to recover properly when it does not.
Good to know
Fa'arah and Hoq both involve sustained ascent on rough, unmarked ground. Hiking times are estimates, not targets, and the guide may shorten or adapt a walk for weather, visibility or group safety. The Shu'ab crossing, snorkelling and swimming stops are also conditional on the sea.
Is this expedition yours?
Choose this expedition if you train regularly, enjoy full days outside and want a genuine mountain component without carrying equipment for several consecutive days. It is not designed for travellers with limited mobility or little experience on uneven trails.
